On Saturday, August 26th, Lifematters hosted a picnic celebration in Wheaton Forest Park off of University Boulevard in Wheaton, Maryland. It was a beautiful sunny day, not too hot, not too cool. Many Lifematters caregivers and officer personnel attended and, by the looks of it, all had a great time. Rich Willis, Executive Director of Client Services for Maryland and DC, was the chef. He prepared wings, rice and beans, hamburgers, hot dogs and other things, all to perfection. Working with two big grills Rich looked to be in his element, never over cooking or under cooking a thing — he was a true grill master. None of the food was wasted since many got to take home leftovers. Peter Loew (HR Director) and Rhizza DelaCruz helped with all the setup and organized the event.
For the kids, there was a big ball field and we provided basketballs, soccer balls and Frisbees to play with. There was a piñata that seems like it would never crack open (I finally had to hit it a few times to break it). There was also a nearby playground with equipment so I’m sure all the children in attendance went home happy and tired.
Near the end of the event, we raffled off prizes – bicycles, TVs and notebook PCs — for those in attendance. Several caregivers walked away with some very cool stuff and a sure understanding that we value their work for Lifematters and their patients.
I hope more people show up next year. I look forward to it all again.
